Mencarini Caps Career with Major Milestone – 3,000 points
This past season, Marcellus Mencarini scored his 3,000th career point in a Lions uniform! He reaches a number that rarely ever gets talked about in college basketball. Through his first four seasons, Mencarini had already captured the Lions' all-time scoring record with 2,481 points, surpassing Mikey Rosario's 2,348 from 2012.
He gained a fifth year of competition from the NCCAA granting a "Covid Year" to anyone who participated in the 2020-2021 season. Mencarini has averaged 611 points per season with a season high of 804 during the 2023-2024 season. He also breaks the school record by averaging 19.3 points per game throughout his career.
"Marcellus is a generational talent," Coach Jordan Nowell said. "Whenever you walk by the gym, Marcellus is in there working on his craft. He loves the game of basketball and put in the time to become the greatest scorer to walk into Trinity's gym. For him to average just under 20 points per game for a career is remarkable. Every defense is game planning a way to slow you down, and he was still able to make the game look easy. He definitely made coaching offense easier!"
Mencarini is one of seven individuals to surpass the 2,000-point mark in Lions history and is now the first to break the 3,000-point barrier. He finishes his career with 3055 career points in a Lions uniform. He shot 48% from the field, 33% from the three-point line, and 70% from the free throw line during his career.
Mencarini had this to say about his career: "Reaching 3,000 career points at Trinity is an incredible honor, but it's so much more than just numbers to me. It's a testament to my hard-work, dedication, and God creating opportunities for me. Not everyone gets the opportunity to continue playing basketball after high school. I am forever grateful for all the things I was able to accomplish and experience in these last 5 years! I want to thank my teammates for not only trusting in me but also for all the memories and lifelong friendships we have made! I want to give a special thanks to Coach Nowell for giving me an opportunity 5 years ago, but for also pouring into my life both on and off the court."
