The Weekend Preview
The Lions athletic teams have a full weekend ahead of them.
All three Lions athletic teams have competitions coming up this weekend. After this weekend all of the fall sport teams will have their first true competition in the books. Here is a look at what is coming up:
Starting with the men and women's cross-country teams. They will be looking to build off their first meet of the season, as they head to Madison, SD. They will be competing in the 16th Annual Herb Blakely Invitational; hosted by the Dakota State University Trojans on Saturday the 7th. The women's race starts at 10:30 am and then the men's will kickoff at 11:15am. The three ladies of the cross-country team will be looking to improve their times from the first meet. Chloe Jacobs has already qualified for nationals and is looking to drop even more time off of her qualifying time as well. For the men's team this will be their first true meet as the first meet was a 5k, which is not a recordable time. The men's team is returning both of their national qualifiers this year in Sam Jacob and Kaleb Renfro, they are both looking to get back to the national meet as well.
The women's volleyball team has had a very busy week, as they have played five games in six days. The Lady Lions are 1-3, overall and are coming off an exhibition loss to the Presentation Saints in three sets. Against the Saints the Lady Lions had leads in two of the sets but could not close out the sets. They are looking forward to their game on Friday, September 6th, against Dakota College at Bottineau. The Lumberjacks enter this contest with a 0-6 record on the season. The Lions are led by Camryn Shockley who leads the team in kills with just under 2 per set, digs where she is averaging 3 per set and also hitting percentage which is just around the .250%. The Lions have employed a two-setter rotation where both Madison Pennington and Kennedy Nofziger are averaging above 3.6 assists per set. The game will be live streamed on Bottineau's athletic website, the game starts at 6 p.m.
The Lions Football will be getting back into action as they take on the Grinnell Pioneers. The Lions will travel to Grinnell, Iowa for a game time kickoff of 1p.m. on Saturday. This is the third ever matchup between these schools, two years ago the Lions traveled down to Grinnell and won 27-21. Last season Grinnell traveled to Ellendale to return the favor overcoming a touchdown deficit at half to win 15-6. This season both teams enter the contest 0-1 with Trinity falling to scholarship program Culver Stockton in their opener. Grinnell comes in off a very close game against Lawrence University, where they had a chance to force overtime in a 13-20 loss. Grinnell will have some of the best linebackers the Lions will see all season as they have two senior all-conference players in Ryan Slager who led D-3 football players in tackles last season with 159 tackles, and had 20 in the opener. They also have Hassan Thompson who was on the D-3 team of the week once last season. The Lions are excited for this opportunity to play against a more comparable school in roster size and athletic ability. Grinnell College will be live streaming the game.
