Volleyball Season Review
Looking back on the season, it proved to be another successful year for the Lions volleyball team. Despite the smaller roster, they still managed to seal more regular season wins than the previous season.
The Lions were a young team this year, with the four returners having only one year of college volleyball experience behind them. However, they showed maturity on the court by finishing on top in the tough situations. The Lions never lost a match that went to five sets during this season. They also finished with a winning record against their NCCAA D2 opponents.
Unfortunately, due to injuries, they were unable finish the season by competing at the NCCAA North Regional Tournament. However, they are looking toward building in numbers for the next season with some great returners and recruiting leads.
It was Camryn Shockley, outside hitter, who led the team in kills for the 2019 season. She had a total of 203 kills, followed by Stacia West who totaled 153 kills for the season. Kennedy Nofziger, a senior, held almost every assist for the team's kills. She completed 441 assists out of the team's total 514 assists. Shockley also had the most digs for the season with 294. Close behind her was Abreena Knudsen, libero, who had a total of 282. Knudsen led the team with an average of 4.03 digs per set, as she was unable to play every set during the season. Nofziger had the most service aces with 26, followed by Shannon Beauchene with 23.
Coach Petersen had this to say about the season, "I am extremely proud each of the athletes on this team. We had great leadership on the team, which made the difference when we were in close matches. I saw great improvement throughout the season, but most importantly great character. I can honestly say that no matter what obstacle came our way, these ladies always gave 100% effort. I believe that is what defines success."
