Lions Football Team Falls in Opener
Lions drop opener 56-0
Coming into the season with just fewer than 30 players on the roster offers some interesting challenges for both the players and coaches of the Lions. Coach Slivoskey stated, "There was a lot of meaningful reps played by some of the young guys which will pay major dividends moving throughout the rest of the year."
There was no shortage of good play by the Lions as well; returning All-American David Steeves was back in mid-season form pacing the Lion's defense with 10 tackles. True Freshman Dakota King was impacting the game with his play as well with 5 tackles, 2 TFL and getting his first career sack. The defensive coordinator Tanner Twigg had some comments on the game as well: "As a coach you never want to see this outcome but, what I did see from the players was the fact that they did not quit and fought until the clock struck zero; if we get this effort every week the teams growth will be huge throughout the rest of this season."
On offense there is an acclamation period going. The Lion's are try to replace three four year starters on the o-line, two of which were All-Americans in their time, pair that with three starters out with injuries and a new QB made for a long day. The offense is going to show improvements, as the three starters should be back in time for the Grinnell game in two weeks.
There were some additional bright spots in the game as well; Jeremy Blanchette showed some playmaking ability in both kick returns and some quick screens on the offense. Newcomer Bu'Zhan Colson showed a lot of potential as being a late addition to the roster added 5 tackles and meaningful special team reps as well. All 11 true freshmen that were suited up got their first ever college snaps as well.
Trinity looks to get back on track on September 8th, against the Grinnell Pioneers in Grinnell, Iowa.
